History of Brother PR series embroidery machines
Brother’s history began in 1908 when it was originally called Yasui Sewing and Co. in Nagoya, Japan that provided repair services and parts for sewing machines. Meanwhile, Masayoshi Yasui inherited his company and renamed it to Yasui Brothers’ Sewing Machine Co.
In 1928, the company’s first product was a chain stitch sewing machine capable of producing straw hats. The machine was popular for its durability compared to German machines at the time.
They introduced and began mass production of home sewing machines in 1932, when Jitsuichi Yasui, Masayoshi’s younger brother and co-founder of their company, succeeded in developing shuttle hooks.
In 1934, they were renamed Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co. which they subsequently manufacture industrial sewing machines in 1936. Their 200 HA-1 domestic straight stitching sewing machines were exported to Shanghai, being requested by the Japanese government.
In 1955, Brother International Corporation (US) was established as their first overseas sales affiliate. In 1958 a European regional sales company was established in Dublin. The corporate name was changed to Brother Industries, Ltd. in 1962. Brother entered the printer market during its long association with Centronics.
In 1968 the company moved its UK headquarters to Audenshaw, Manchester, after acquiring the Jones Sewing Machine Company, a long-established British sewing machine maker.
In 1979, they introduced and manufactured their first computerized sewing machined called ZZ3-B820 “Opus 8”.
Brother started making commercial/multi needle embroidery machines in 2003 in the factory located in Taiwan. In 2003 the company announced the first PR series multi-needles embroidery machine PR600 / PR600C (Come with the first generation PRCF1 cap frame set). Until now the PR600 still one of the strongest machine in the market that keep stitching out great design everyday. All Brother PR series embroidery machines are made in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan by Taiwan Brother Industries AG (台弟工業股份公司)
In 2006 Brother released 6 needles embroidery machine PR600II / PR600IIC (Come with PRCF2 cap frame set).
In 2007 Brother released the new PR620 6 needles embroidery machine and the upgrade kits for the PR600 (PRU600 upgrade kit, XE2565-301) and PR600II(PRU600II upgrade kit, XE2565-001 ) machines to upgrade to PR620 / PR620C. The upgrade kits added magnet sensor board and replaced cylinder connection for new PRCL1 Cylinder frame and new PRCF3 Cap Frame Set.
In 2009 Brother released the new PR650 / PR650C (come with PRCF3 cap frame set) 6 needles embroidery machine.
In 2010 Brother released the new PR1000 the first PR series 10 needles embroidery machine with built-in camera scanning function on it. Also marked their introduction of a PC design and editing software on the sewing/embroidery machines (Innov-is I) called PE-Design.
In 2011 Brother released the new PR650E / PR650EC (come with PRCF3 cap frame set) 6 needles embroidery machine and PR1000E 10 needles embroidery machine.
In December 2011, Brother diversified its offerings by acquiring Nefsis, an innovator in web-based remote collaboration and conferencing software.
In November 2012, Brother announced that it had built the last UK-made typewriter at its north Wales factory. It had made 5.9 million typewriters in its Wrexham factory since it opened in 1985. Brother donated the last machine to London’s Science Museum.
As of March 2013, Brother’s annual turnover was ¥641 billion (US$5.84 billion at February 2018 exchange rates).
In 2013 Brother released the new PR655 / PR655C (come with PRCF3 cap frame set) 6 needles embroidery machine with built-in LED center point position light(many people don’t know it’s a LED light and called it laser point light). Also introduce a first ScanNCut machine named the CM550DX.
On August 8, 2015 Annual Brother Dealer Meeting 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee. Brother released the new PRS100 Persona single needle embroidery machine that is the first single needle machine can use most of PR series embroidery machines accessories with built-in LED center point position light. Also it has ability to make free motion quilt with many built-in patterns.
On August 2, 2016 Annual Brother Dealer Meeting 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee. Brother released the new PR1050X 10 needles embroidery machine, the first machine come with built-in design center on it.
On August 7, 2018, Brother officially revealed the new sewing machine product lineup at B2B meeting (Back To Business Dealer Conference) held annually in Orlando, Florida to commemorate Brother’s 100th anniversary since its inception in 1908. The newest top-of-the-line Brother Sewing/Embroidery/Quilting machine is the Luminaire Innov-ìs XP-1. It features StitchVision technology, which uses light projections to virtually preview a stitch accurately and precisely, as well as a 10.6″ by 16″ maximum embroidery area. Also released the new PR670E / PR670EC 6 needles embroidery machine.
As of March 2019, Brother’s annual revenue was ¥683 billion.
In August 2020, Brother first online B2B meeting (August 5th, 2020 The Brother New for 2021 Virtual Back To Business Event) released the new PR1055X 10 needles embroidery machine with wireless connection. Wireless transfer files and can connect to smartphones, apple watch to monitor the stitching while you busy on something else.
